Why it matters
Dust and insects inside lenses are visible from below and make a space look older than it is.
Dirt on lenses and reflectors reduces light output, so a cleaned room often looks brighter without changing a single bulb.
Fixtures are typically skipped by nightly janitorial crews because they require ladders or special tools.
How AELC providers clean light fixtures and troffers
Every AELC Network Provider follows the AELC Source-Control Method: do not move the contamination; capture it or contain it. For light fixtures and troffers, that means:
- Identify. Count fixtures by type, note lens styles and insect buildup, and agree with the facility on switching circuits off where lenses will be opened.
- Capture. Vacuum the fixture face and trim with a HEPA source-capture vacuum and soft brush.
- Contain. Damp-wipe lenses and louvers with microfiber; where approved, open lenses to remove insects and wipe the inside.
- Clean. Use lens-safe cleaners only, never solvents that can cloud acrylic.
- Verify. Restore power, confirm every fixture works and photograph results.
Typical reach class: Standard Reach. About AELC reach classes.
How often should light fixtures and troffers be cleaned?
| Setting | Recommended frequency |
|---|---|
| Restaurants, retail and medical | Every 6 months |
| Offices and schools | Every 6 to 12 months |
| Kitchens and food prep | Every 3 months |
Grease, lint, humidity and how visible the area is can shorten these intervals. See how often high dusting should be done.
How much does light fixture and troffer lens cleaning cost?
Typical range: $8–$20 per fixture (per fixture). Opening lenses to remove insects, or fixtures above about 16 feet, take more time.
Prices are set by each independent provider. Ranges reflect published market data and AELC time standards. See the full above-eye-level cleaning cost guide.
DIY vs. hiring a pro
- Staff can wipe low fixtures with a barely damp cloth when lights are off and cool.
- Never use glass cleaner with ammonia on acrylic lenses.
Safety and when to stop
- Turn fixtures off and let them cool before handling lenses.
- Leave any electrical issue, flicker or damaged wiring to an electrician.

Industries that need it
Light Fixture and Troffer Lens Cleaning: frequently asked questions
Does cleaning light fixtures make a room brighter?
Yes. Dust and film on lenses and reflectors block light, so cleaning often makes a noticeable difference without changing bulbs.
Can you change bulbs while cleaning?
Many providers will swap a bulb with a facility-supplied replacement, but relamping programs and electrical work are separate services.
How do bugs get inside light fixtures?
Insects are attracted to light and enter through small gaps in lenses and housings. Opening and wiping the lens during cleaning removes them.
