Why it matters
Grease vapor rises and settles on every overhead surface in a kitchen, where it traps dust and can drip or flake.
Health inspectors commonly look at overhead cleanliness in food prep areas.
Regular degreasing is faster and cheaper than restoring a ceiling after years of buildup.
How AELC providers clean commercial kitchen ceilings
Every AELC Network Provider follows the AELC Source-Control Method: do not move the contamination; capture it or contain it. For commercial kitchen ceilings, that means:
- Identify. Confirm ceiling materials, grease level and the kitchen's closed hours.
- Protect. Cover or remove food, utensils and food-contact surfaces, and cover equipment.
- Capture. Vacuum loose dust from fixtures and grid first.
- Clean. Apply a degreaser suited to the surface, agitate with microfiber or soft pads, and rinse-wipe.
- Verify. Inspect, remove protection, sanitize exposed food-contact surfaces per the kitchen's procedures, and photograph.

How often should commercial kitchen ceilings be cleaned?
| Setting | Recommended frequency |
|---|---|
| High-volume kitchens | Every 3 months |
| Moderate-volume restaurants | Every 6 months |
| Light-cooking cafes | Every 12 months |
Grease, lint, humidity and how visible the area is can shorten these intervals. See how often high dusting should be done.
How much does commercial kitchen ceiling cleaning cost?
Typical range: $0.40–$1.50 per square foot of ceiling (per ceiling sq ft). Grease load drives price. Published wall and ceiling degreasing near cook lines commonly runs $300–$600 per session for a section.
Prices are set by each independent provider. Ranges reflect published market data and AELC time standards. See the full above-eye-level cleaning cost guide.
DIY vs. hiring a pro
- Wipe ceiling areas near the hood monthly to slow buildup.
- Keep hood filters on schedule.
Safety and when to stop
- Never wet electrical fixtures; switch off circuits as needed.
- Hood and exhaust systems are cleaned only by certified hood-cleaning contractors.

Industries that need it
Commercial Kitchen Ceiling Cleaning: frequently asked questions
Is kitchen ceiling cleaning the same as hood cleaning?
No. Hood cleaning covers the hood interior, filters, ducts and exhaust fan under fire code and is done by certified hood-cleaning contractors. AELC providers clean the ceilings, walls and fixtures around it.
Can greasy ceiling tiles be cleaned?
Washable vinyl-faced tiles degrease well. Porous mineral-fiber tiles in kitchens often cannot be fully restored and may need replacement with washable tile.
When is kitchen ceiling cleaning done?
Overnight or during closed hours, with food and equipment protected.
